I have finally jumped on the Netflix bandwagon, and my dears, I am in love. I'm spending far too much time these days watching live-streaming period dramas.* After a viewing of Bright Star, I've nearly convinced myself that I would really quite like to live in 19th Century England, even if the movie did have a rather tragic ending. They were just so happy! Until he died, penniless and believing he was a failure, when he was my age. And she was grief-stricken all the rest of her days. Whatevs.
{Images from Design*Sponge, whose Living In. . . Bright Star provided me with much delight this morning}
So, do tell me, what are your favorite period dramas?
(I need to add them to my Netflix queue!)
*(there is something about that that seems hilarious- period dramas streaming right onto my computer! Okay. Maybe it's just me.)
I'm afraid I can't help you with period dramas, but if you want some good fart joke comedy recommendations from Netflix, I'm your girl. :)
ReplyDelete1 Possession (which is only half period drama, half present day Aaron Eckhart and Gwyneth Paltrow)
ReplyDelete2 Young Victoria (love LOVE Emily Blunt)
3 Howards End (GO EMMA THOMPSON GO)
4 Ideal Husband (kind of comedy, but also dramatic)
5 Impromptu
6 And I just have to add Sense and Sensibility, because again, I worship at the shrine of Emma Thompson)
Hold the phone, Bright Star is on streaming? Excuse me while I fumble for the remote.
ReplyDeleteOh and as far as period dramas I enjoy, anything by Jane Austen obvs., of course Becoming Jane although I am always so disappointed and sad when they don't run off together, Dickens' Little Dorrit (mini series), Little Women, and tons more I can't think of now. Oh and I second all of Dylan's suggestions, I just watched Possession again over Thanksgiving while everyone else was enjoying their 12th hour of football.
I loved Bright Star and Young Victoria.
ReplyDeleteLOVE NETFLIX. Bright Star is on my queue! I can't wait to see it!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE period films, too. More than anything. I just got Tess of the D'Urbervilles in the mail and here are a few on my queue:
Anne of Green Gables (all of them)
Northanger Abbey
CoCo Before Chanel
Sense and Sensibility
Persuasion
Little Women
Road to Avonlea
Mansfield Park
and a few others. Just look up book titles too! Lots of Dickens in there if you look for it! :)
You are reminding me I need to get back into Netflix!
ReplyDeleteI have put this on my Netflix queue! (And for me Pride & Prejudice, the BBC version with Colin Firth, will always remain the quintessential period drama :)).
ReplyDeleteOh, girl after my own heart! I am such a disgusting Netflix junkie. Sometimes, an entire Saturday will pass, and at 10pm I'll realize that all I did was watch Netflix. (While cleaning, working on homework and such...but still!)
ReplyDeleteAnd yes. Agreed on the period movies! My favs:
Young Victoria (so, so good)
The Dutchess
Dangerous Liasions
Girl With the Pearl Earring
Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea
and of course Pride and Prejudice...and Sense and Sensibility.
Oh my. Now I need to watch a few movies. :)
