Baby basil
{When I was a little girl, my mom taught me that you could start seeds in eggshells. It's my favorite trick now.}

Every morning when I wake up, the first thing I do is go downstairs and talk to my plants.

Someday, I will have a huge garden where I grow strawberries and tomatoes and eggplant and peppers, but for now, the herbs on my windowsill fulfill my need to be surrounded by green things.

I love them.

  1. I wish I could have a garden. I can't even really have a window box. There is zero sun by my apartment windows. Someday.

  2. I'm lucky enough to have a garden for the first time in a long time. It's so rewarding. One of my favorite things to do is to spend Sunday mornings weeding. It's a mindless activity that is so therapeutic.

    If you want a garden, perhaps you could look into getting a community garden spot?

  3. Yesterday, at 9:19pm I celebrated Abbie's arrival in my life. Here are some of the reasons I'm glad she was born

    Nobody giggles like Abbie. She is truly jolly.
    Abbie Speed. Abbie has moved at her own pace since she was born. Everytime I slow down to her pace, I discover wonderous things about the world -- things I would miss at my usual breakneck pace.

    Being Abbie's mom grew me. I found strength, patience, and compassion in me that I never would have known without her.

    Abbie often brings out the best in me.

    You can count on her. She does what she says she's going to do when she says she's going to do it and she does it 150%.

    She's a mama tiger in the making (I discovered that when she accompanied me to a root canal and dealt, ever so politely but ever so firmly with the dentist and his assistant).

    I'm so glad you chose me to be your mom, girlie goo. It has been 25 years of fun and it gets better every year.

  5. that egg shell idea is so good. Unfortunately i dont have green fingers at all...any thing green just tends to turn to brown around me. Maybe i have brown fingers then...i wonder what brown fingers are useful for?

  7. Starting seeds in eggshells is such a fun idea! I'm loving this ode to plants, as I'm just getting into it myself (bought three basil plants recently, and a succulent at the beginning of the summer).
