Picnics, playing in fountains, graduation parties, watermelon and mojitos at the boat club and perfect weather make for a fantastic memorial day weekend. I hope yours was wonderful, too.

*I took a little blog break because I was uninspired and grumpy, and something needed to change. It did just the trick. I missed you guys, though, and I'm so glad to be back.

Happy Happy, Marissa!

Marissa

This is Marissa. She is one of my dearest friends from Dartmouth, and her birthday was a month ago. (Oh dear, how did I get so behind on birthday posts?)

I love Marissa for lots of reasons. Some of them are:

1. When she thinks something's funny, she laughs so hard she stops breathing. (While it makes her friends worried for her health, it also makes them feel very witty.)
2. Marissa is remarkable at keeping in touch. Not only does she have a job that allows her to fly all over the country, visiting everyone, but she is also always remembers birthdays and Christmas cards.
3. Marissa knows how to have fun, more than almost anyone else I know. One night in college, we went on an adventurequest that still ranks among the best saturday nights I've ever had. More recently, she came to visit for her birthday and we drank whiskey, sang Backstreet Boys songs and went dancing at a dive bar. It was ten times more fun because she was there.
4. While Marissa knows how to be silly, she also knows when to be a grownup, and how to do it with grace and style. Need someone to help you write that note to your landlord? Marissa will help you compose one that sounds much better than anything you could come up with.
5. As different as we are, Marissa and I have really similar world views. One day last fall, we were sitting in a cafe, listening to these Harvard grad students get into a heated debate about something really dumb, and we just looked at each other and burst out laughing. There aren't that many people with whom I share brain waves like that.
6. Marissa likes feelings almost as much as I do. As such, she is my go-to person when I need to spend four hours dissecting an emotional crisis.

Happy Happy, Marissa!
I'm so glad you were born.

Happy Friday!

The lion is my favorite part of my bike
{My new-to-me bike has a lion on it! I think it's my favorite thing about it. Besides the saddlebags.}

Happy Friday, everyone!
This weekend, I'm going to go for a bike ride, clean out my bedroom at my mom's, and finally get caught up on birthday posts.
I lead a thrilling life, it's true.

How about you? Do you have any adventures planned for the weekend?

I heart my bike.

On Sunday, as soon as I dropped my stuff off at home, I grabbed my bike and went for a ride.
It was so lovely to fly down the bike path (even if I did have to keep pulling down the skirt of my graduation dress). I can't wait for more bike rides this summer.

The whole family spent the weekend in Northampton for Dewey's graduation.
It was so wonderful.

She's the one with the bright red lipstick
{This was right after Rachel Maddow nodded at her}

Congratulations, Dewey Cum Laude!
We are so proud of you!

p.s. This may have been the best graduation speech I've ever heard. Rachel Maddow is so cool.

Do you ever feel like you need a week off, or at least a couple of days, to attend to the details of daily life? To fold laundry, go grocery shopping, remember that exercise is something you actually enjoy? My life has been a little like that lately.
I shouldn't complain, and I'm not, really: my life is busy because there are so many wonderful people in it. Even when I needed to spend an entire evening doing taxes, I had a mother who helped me through it, and let me eat half of her tub of Cool Whip Free, too.
I have a couple more nights of excitement (this weekend, I'm going to Northampton for Dewey's graduation from Smith!), then next week, I'm not doing anything. I'm going to take lunch breaks at work, and going to the first farmer's markets of the season, and I'm going to sit in my house. I can't wait.

I would blog, but tax forms and Cool Whip Free are eating my life right now. Send help?

(Almost) all better.

Rhubarb and yogurt makes an excellent breakfast.

Thanks, friends, for indulging my whines. (And the emails! Man, I got some of the nicest emails of my life after that awful post.)

I'm feeling better now. Long runs, perfect weather, and roommate dinners helped. So did roasted rhubarb with greek yogurt for breakfast, and plenty of t.v. on Hulu.

How about you? What do you do when you're in a funk? How do you get yourself out of it? I feel like this is a situation where collective knowledge from the internet could be useful.

Man.

These past couple of days have been rough.

Nothing unmanageable, and most of the trouble has been my own doing,* but still. I am ready for life to go on an upswing again. Meanwhile, last.fm knew my mood perfectly today, and look what they played me:

This song, some farmer's market asparagus for dinner, and a little House Hunters International is starting to make me feel better already.

*Except the huge pipe explosion and subsequent boil water order for the entire metro Boston area, minus Cambridge. I had nothing to do with that.
